Tyre buyers in the UAE often ask two related questions: “How old is this tyre?” and “Is it still safe?” The sidewall date code answers the first question. The second requires an inspection of age, tread, damage, pressure history and vehicle-specific guidance.
Finding the four-digit manufacturing date
Look for the tyre identification code moulded into the sidewall. Its final four digits represent the week and year of manufacture:
- 2324 = week 23 of 2024.
- 0126 = week 1 of 2026.
- 4822 = week 48 of 2022.
The complete code may be on the inward-facing sidewall, so do not assume it is missing if you cannot see it from outside the vehicle.
Manufacturing date is not the whole safety test
A date code is not a stand-alone expiry stamp. Two tyres made in the same week can age differently because of storage, sunlight, heat exposure, pressure, loading, impacts and mileage. Conversely, a tyre with deep tread may still require replacement if its structure or rubber has deteriorated.
NHTSA advises drivers to consider physical damage, irregular wear, pressure loss, noise and vibration as well as age. Michelin recommends professional annual inspections after five years of service and replacement by ten years from manufacture, while vehicle manufacturers may specify earlier limits. In the UAE, follow applicable inspection requirements and the most conservative vehicle or tyre manufacturer guidance.
Replace or stop driving when you find these signs
- A sidewall bulge or bubble.
- Exposed cords, separation or a deep cut.
- Cracking that is extensive or reaches structural areas.
- Tread level with the built-in wear indicators.
- Repeated unexplained pressure loss.
- Severe flat spotting, vibration or impact damage.
- A professional inspection finds internal damage after running underinflated.
Questions to ask when buying tyres in Abu Dhabi
- What is the manufacturing week and year?
- Is this the vehicle manufacturer’s approved size, load index and speed rating?
- What warranty applies and what does it exclude?
- Does the quoted price include fitting, balancing, valves and VAT?
- Will the old tyres be inspected for alignment or suspension-related wear?
Do not choose solely by date or brand name. The correct specification and installation quality are more important than chasing the newest possible production week.
Why tyre age deserves extra attention in Abu Dhabi
Long exposure to sunlight, high ambient temperatures, underinflation and high-speed travel can accelerate stress on an already weakened tyre. Abu Dhabi Police’s current summer guidance calls for periodic vehicle inspection, correct tyre pressure and confirmation that tyres are roadworthy before travel.
What to do with tyres of mixed ages
Have each tyre inspected and confirm the vehicle manufacturer’s replacement and axle-fitment guidance. If only two tyres are replaced, correct placement depends on vehicle and tyre guidance; do not make the decision from tread appearance alone. All fitted tyres must meet the required size and specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the tyre date code located?
It is moulded into a sidewall as the final four digits of the tyre identification code. The complete code may appear on only one side, so the inner sidewall may need inspection.
What does 1523 mean on a tyre?
It means the tyre was manufactured in the 15th week of 2023. It is a production date, not an expiry date by itself.
Should all four tyres have exactly the same date?
Not necessarily, but they should be suitable for the vehicle, correctly matched by size and specification, and individually inspected. Ask about date codes before purchase.
Can unused tyres age in storage?
Yes. Rubber changes over time even when tread has not been used. Storage conditions, sunlight, heat, maintenance and service history all affect condition.
